ABOUT US

Unblemished Trading since 1952

Salisbury Glass was formed in 1952 when Doug Gower decided the time was right to start on his own, working out of a wooden shed he quickly built up a reputation for quality of service backed by his determination not to let people down.

Success followed and it was not long before Doug needed help and his eldest son Paul joined him in 1965 as an apprentice glazier. With continued growth 1968 saw SGC move to larger premises on Gigant Street working opposite Gibbs & Mew Brewery.

Doug’s second son Steve joined the company in 1969 & was later followed by siblings Mark & Jillian Gower in 1977 & 1981 respectively.

In the early seventies Paul Gower initiated the manufacturing of aluminium windows, cut and assembled in a small workshop close to Gigant Street and so this started the replacement window side of the business. The new venture enabled the business to grow rapidly and the redundant Methodist Chapel adjoining the main workshop was purchased to manufacture PVCU windows and sealed double glazed units.

By 1982 the business was thriving built on the original values of a quality product & excellent customer service, so a larger premises was sought and it was decided to move to the Churchfields industrial Estate. This triggered the retirement of Doug Gower and allowed Paul Gower to take over as Managing director to drive the company further forward.

The company enjoyed continued success in the domestic market aligned with local builders, but there was an ever-increasing demand for commercial products with higher volume. Steve Gower headed this side ably supported by Christopher Grigg and the department steadily grew forming many relationships with local authorities and Land registry offices.

Manufacturing space was again at a premium and it was decided to purchase land vacated by the disused abattoir and build a new factory furnished with technically advanced machinery for enhanced fabrication output.

In 2006 Paul & Steve Gower decided to retire and Mark Gower headed a management buy-out that introduced Ian Paton (Jillian’s husband) Chris Grigg & David Naish to the team. Steady growth has ensued on both sides of the company driven by the company values of quality and integrity and the ability to design & create solutions to many obstacles within our market.

The above is only achievable with trained and committed staff and we are lucky to have that in abundance with many of our staff being with us on our journey for 30 plus years.

The company remains in the Gower family control and has just celebrated its 70th year of unblemished trading and with Mark’s son Luke fulfilling the role of Sales & Operations Director within the company, with a continued focus on maintaining the long-established values.
